The study of damage and subsequent failure of engineering structures subjected to severe overloading, particularly due to shocks or explosions, is of significant interest across many industrial sectors. The objective of this work is to propose a fully operational, three-dimensional, XFEM based unified methodology to address complex engineering problems involving large metallic structures subjected to accidental overloads, strong material and kinematic nonlinearities, as well as high strain rates.
