Coupling of different physical models, as they occur in ice-flow models that focus on presenting the processes inside and around the glacier, are difficult to set up. Those processes are ice deformation, water flow at the glacier bed and also inside the sediment below the glacier, as well as heat exchange and also melting and freezing at the boundaries to the atmosphere and in some cases the ocean. Alongside examples implemented in the ice-sheet model Elmer/Ice we demonstrate solutions to these coupling problems.
