From Data Structures to Automatic Anisotropic hp-Adaptivity

I will first shortly review the main ideas behind the data structures and algorithms supporting anistropic hp-adaptivity for 3D hybrid 1-irregular meshes consisting of hexas, tets, prisms and pyramids. Those include: • concept of modified element (partial assembly accounting for constraints); • tree-based data structures supporting anisotropic adaptivity; • main algorithms: determining element to nodes connectivity, element neighbors etc.; • concept of orientation embedded shape functions. I will finish with an example of an algorithm supporting automatic anisotropic hp-adaptivity within the context of the Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) method.
