Stabilizing High-Order Discretization of Non-Equilibrium Flow Models by means of Physics-based Artificial Viscosity

This work introduces a shock-capturing approach for high-order methods that provides a robust and general stabilization mechanism valid for thermochemical non-equilibrium flows. Artificial Viscosity (AV) methods are explored in this context, and a physics-based AV model is implemented in the Argo DG solver. In particular, bulk viscosity is used as a stabilization parameter. The need for a sensor to detect discontinuities is discussed together with considerations regarding the requirement for a continuous AV field.
