Digital Validation of Cable System Layouts in Automotive Industry using Coupled Systems of Geometrically Exact Rods as Grey Box Models

In 2005 the Fraunhofer Institutes ITWM and FCC started to develop models, algorithms, numerical methods and software to enable the interactive design and digital validation of cable system layouts for engineers in automotive industry. A first presentation of early results has been given at the ECMI 2006 conference. In our presentation we will briefly summarize the key elements of our developments, demonstrate their usage in industrial use cases, and point out the current challenges that have to be addressed in further research and development work in computational mechanics, applied mathematics and software engineering.
