Weighted-residual based arclength continuation method

A weighted-residual based arclength continuation method is proposed to overcome inherent limitations of step-by-step continuation procedures, such as computational cost and the treatment of non-smooth nonlinearities. The method consist in solving the nonlinear system, closed with a constraint equation, in a weak sense. To this aim, the unknowns are expanded on an approximation basis consisting in functions of the arclength variable that parametrises the response curve. This global approach proves computationally efficient and provides results with an accuracy comparable to regular continuation procedures.
