The venting process during thermal runaway plays an important role in the safety design of electric vehicles and other electrical devices. In this work, a thermal runaway simulation model of a modern high-energy density pouch cell with NMC chemistry [1] is further developed and assessed against experimental thermal runaway using an in-house testing method. The previously developed source-term was derived primarily from pressure and velocity measurements and was not based on a detailed analysis of the cell’s heat release. The present model extends this approach by incorporating a conjugate heat transfer (CHT) model, gas species and particle modelling to improve heat release and transport modelling. The extended model shows reasonable agreement with the temperature measurements obtained during the cell tests. The resulting source term could provide a basis for safety analysis of battery packs and modules, although further validation is necessary before such applications.
