Anisotropic coefficients may or may not lead to anisotropic solutions of a p.d.e., e.g. to boundary layers. Anisotropic features in the solution can be resolved using anisotropic meshes. In the presentation, we discuss a priori and a posteriori error estimates in such situations with focus on the particular challenges.
